The nation as a whole is suffering the consequences. And to be honest, I'm afraid that it sends the message that if you're going to do the time, you might as well commit the crime. At least you'll be able to enjoy some short term benefits. I've spent the last couple years teaching people how to use their HELOC to accelerate paying off their mortgage. It doesn't take a big HELOC to do that.
