Choice of Where to Retire Can Be an Important One

The promise of living a retired life can be filled with joyful anticipation or a source of great stress.  Where one chooses to live in retirement can make all the difference.

WalletHub, a financial website, just released a study that ranks each of our 50 states in relationship to retirement.  WalletHub used 45 metrics across three categories (affordability, quality of life and health care) to weigh its rankings.

Affordability

Affordability included measures such as cost of living, annual costs of adult day care and in-home services, inheritance laws and taxes. Obviously, housing and transportation costs were included within this category as well.

Health Care

Considerations under the heading of health care included, but were not limited to, the availability and quality of geriatric care, life expectancy and health of retired seniors, and COVID-positivity and death rates.

Quality of Life

Different quality of life issues were scored by variable weights. Some of those issues included the share of population aged 65+, public transportation, crime, food insecurity, and work/volunteer opportunities.  Weather also came into play in each state’s overall scoring
