Everyone Wants to Be More Productive, Right?

In the seemingly never-ending search for improved productivity, here are a few tips from 200 experts and high achievers.

  1. Use the Bright Method to calendar your time and your daily tasks.
    1. Block out time for everything (even waking up, exercising, showering, etc.) in a digital calendar
    2. Kelly Nolan, creator of the Bright Method, said that a time blocking system helps people make “good decisions” because people know when to say “yes” and “no” based on this time management strategy.
  2. Pitch luke-warm and even bad ideas.
    1. Adi Goodrich, co-operator of Sing Sing studio, said what matters most is not the idea itself that you’re pitching but the discussion sparked by the pitched idea..
    2. Goodrich said, “If you’re working with good collaborators, something always comes out of the conversation.”
  3. You are your best salesperson.
    1. Be humble about your enthusiasm.
    2. Be excited to share and learn from others.
    3. Value others and their ideas…those people will tell their friends and colleagues how interested you were in them.
  4. Be diplomatic when you disagree with your client/team member.
    1. Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist with the University of Pennsylvania, believes in a non-oppositional, non-confrontational approach.
    2. When you contradict someone else’s idea by explaining your own idea, you run the risk of polarizing others.
    3. Grant suggests asking, “What would change your mind?” Such a question opens up an opportunity in which both of you could work together on solutions.  By working together on solutions, you will hear the other person’s priorities and concerns so that her/his priorities/concerns would be included in your “joint” solutions.
  5. Procrastinate productively.
    1. Don’t want to do a particular tedious, difficult task on your to-do list for that day? Choose a different task that’s also a priority on your to-do list.
    2. By having accomplished another priority task rather than accomplishing nothing at all, you’ll likely feel better about yourself,  feel less guilty and fall less (if at all) “behind.”
