AARP’s Livability Index now uses 61 community characteristics across seven categories (housing, transportation, the environment, etc.).  The site ranks the top-scoring livable cities by population size: large cities (more than 500,000 people, midsize cities (100,000 to 499,999), small cities (25,000 – 99,999) and small towns (5,000 – 24,999).

Index users can customize and rank their preferences by indicating their most important priorities such as health care over job opportunities.

Within the category of housing, the Index measures cities by three factors: affordability (including such things as monthly costs and availability of subsidized housing); accessibility (such as how many homes can be entered without steps); and the types/variety of housing options.

Philadelphia topped the list for large cities.  Among the top midsized cities,

Cincinnati took the # 1 spot with Pompano Beach FL, Syracuse NY, Miami and Cleveland following.
