Fewer People Moved in 2021
According to a March 2022 report from the US Census Bureau, there was an historic drop in mover rate during 2021. The Census Bureau’s report indicated that 8.4% of people moved to a different residence in 2021, down from 9.3% who moved during 2020.
This 8.4% is the lowest share of movers since the Census Bureau began collecting this data in 1948. The Bureau report stated, “In 2021, less than one-fifth (of movers) moved from one state to another, while more than half moved within the same county. This was also the case in 2017 through 2020.”
This latest Bureau report on moving also notes that due to international travel restrictions in place during 2021, there were fewer international movers. There were also fewer people moving for job-related purposes in 2021.
