According to the US State Department, some 9 million Americans are living overseas and some 20,690, 500 US passports were issued in fiscal year 2019. According to a State Department spokesperson, Lana Bortolot said that between 2014 and 2019, the spike in the number of US passports issued hit a whopping +47%.
Of course, the leaps in technology, social media and the mobile economy are enabling such mobile ex-patriotism over both the short-term and long-term. Tools to help make all of this moving around possible include, but are not limited to in any way shape or form, Google Voice for dual country phone numbers, Transferwise and Xoom to move money between banks in two countries, Skype and FaceTime for being connected and video conferencing for intercontinental business meetings.
So where is everyone going and where are they living, if not in the US? Both “traditional” and online real estate brokerages need to pay attention here because different ages and demographics make these destination decisions differently.
