Many agents say things like:

“I want to make more money.”
“I need to save more.”
“I want to get in better shape.”

These aren’t goals—they’re dreams. And dreams are easy to ignore unless they come with a plan.

As we always say:

“A goal is a dream with an action plan.”

That’s where SMART goals come in.

What Makes a Goal SMART?

Every goal should be:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic
  • Timely

Start with These 5 Key Life Areas

Set SMART goals in the following areas:

  1. Family
  2. Financial
  3. Physical
  4. Mental/Spiritual
  5. Educational

Important: Don’t stress about having perfect balance. You may go big in one area while keeping others in maintenance mode. That’s okay—your goals will evolve over time.


Let’s Focus on the Most Common One: Financial

Most agents say something vague like:

“I want to save more money.”

Let’s turn that dream into a SMART goal.

Ask yourself:

  1. Specific & Measurable:
    How much money do you want to save? Why that amount? Is it for a 6-month reserve or a down payment?
  2. Attainable:
    Is this possible based on your current income? How many closings will it take?
  3. Realistic:
    Is your goal a stretch—or completely out of range? Is it 2x or 100x what you’ve done before?
  4. Timely:
    What’s your deadline?
  5. What’s the Plan?
    What actions are required? What skills do you need to upgrade? How many contacts, appointments, and listings do you need to make this happen?
  6. Write it Down and Share It:
    Get accountability from a coach or mentor.
  7. Create a Daily Schedule That Reflects It:
    Your schedule is your scoreboard. If it doesn’t reflect your goals, you won’t hit them.

Real-World Example: From Wishful Thinking to Strategic Goal

Dream:
“I want to save more money.”

SMART Goal Conversion:
“I will save $60,000 by December 31st.”
