Pet owners are making relocation decisions with their pets’ best interests in mind.
Dogs & Cats Matter
More than 23 million households added a dog and/or a cat during the first year of the pandemic, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Not only are those newly adopted dogs and cats pulling the guilt strings of their owners if/when those owners are being asked/required to return to offices for work, those dogs and cats are affecting housing decisions for pet owners wanting to relocate.

One survey done in March by Rover, a pet services firm, found 72% of the 1,000 dog owners surveyed would consider moving to a house better suited to their dog’s needs. 61% cited their dog’s “well-being” as their catalyst to move.
Another recent collaborative analysis done by Zillow and Rover found that many dog owners are looking for areas that are more conducive to their dogs’ needs. Zillow contributed its single-family home rentals identified as “pet friendly” from March 2021 – March 2022 and Rover contributed its “dog accounts” from June 2021 to March 2022.

Note that big cities were not included in this Zillow/Rover analysis, likely because “adequate accommodations” for pets were insufficient.
