Emergency Kit Items for Homes During Storms

While winter storms continue to be active in the east, hurricane season is soon upon us.

Here are emergency items every homeowner needs to have on hand inside their home for just in case scenarios:

1. Emergency container
   1. Make sure the heavy-duty plastic container with its latching is large enough to hold all the emergency items needed to be stored inside
   2. Make sure the container is air and water tight
   3. Make sure the container is easily accessible and clearly market.
2. Water
   1. Store unopened bottled water in a dark place next to the emergency kit/container
   2. Plan on 1 gallon/day
   3. If there’s time, fill a bathtub with water for hygiene and sanitation
3. Food
   1. 3-day supply of non-perishable canned vegetables, soups, energy bars, unsalted nuts
   2. Make sure to have a manual can opener
4. First aid kit
   1. Supplies to treat minor wounds, cuts, burns and pain
   2. Prescription medicines
5. Toiletries
   1. Toilet paper, tissues, soap, toothpaste, diapers, hand sanitizer
6. Battery-operated radio
   1. Keep radio in emergency container
   2. Store uninstalled batteries separately
   3. Know radio stations that transmit storm information and emergency information
7. Battery-operated flashlight or lantern with extra batteries stored separately
8. Candles and matches stored in water-tight wrapping in emergency kit
9. Compact heat source
   1. Use a propane heater or camp stove
   2. Make sure heat source is safe to use inside
10. Utility Knife
    1. Camp knife or multi-tool knife with scissors, sharp blade, tweezers, screwdriver
11. Duct tape
12. Blankets and extra set of clothing
    1. Hats, gloves, clothing
    2. Lightweight and easy to pack
