It’s time to move, everybody. Now.
Our work obsessed nation moves less than half the recommended 10,000 steps/day. 38% of our sedentary nation is obese. As a country, we rank 30th in the world when it comes to physical well being.
It’s time to get up and move at least 21 minutes/day and a minimum of 150 minutes/week. It’s time to find reasons to move during your lunch breaks, during your calls and/or meetings (e.g. Steve Jobs), during the moments you just need to think.
When you start moving, you will, ever so slowly, begin to improve how much and how well you move. And with that improvement, your moving will help you stay active, boost your heart health and increase your energy levels.
Here are some motivational tips that will help you achieve your moving goals into and throughout 2018.
1. Count your steps. Every day. It doesn’t matter how you count them…with a FitBit, an IPhone, an IWatch, a Garmin, a physical diary you keep on a daily basis, an any thing you use…just count them. By counting your steps, you’ll know where you’re starting and where you’ll want to go in terms of your goals. And by counting your steps, you’ll unconsciously up your step count.
2. Talk about your moving program with your friends. They will become your accountability partners. They may even become your waling, hiking, running, swimming, cycling moving partners. It’s more fun to move together than to move solo. And once you get to the point where you want to compete, it’s more fun to compete with other people than it is to compete with yourself. You can even talk about your moving workouts with your social media buddies by you connecting your workout logs with Strava.
3. Create, define and stick with your moving goals. A 10K walk or run translates into 5 miles. A 20 or 30 or 60-minute workout at a gym 3 days a week translates into 60 or 90 or 180 minutes of moving every week.
However you like to move, do it. Mix up how you move. Measure it. Count it.
Nike was right all those years ago…just do it. Now. At the beginning of the New Year. And keep moving. All year.
