There is nothing magical about creating success. Becoming successful is about building and maintaining a daily routine that helps boost productivity, accomplishing a daily to-do list and about helping you feel good while you are building, maintaining and executing what needs to be done every day.
Marie Johnson for InmanNews looked at habits of successful CEOs for clues about what goes into creating success. Here is what she found:
- Successful people wake up early. Their morning routine sets the tone for the rest of their day.
- Brett Yormack of the New Jersey Nets gets up at 3:30 AM every morning.
- Virgin America’s David Cash is up at 4:15 AM.
- Disney’s Bob Iger gets up at 4:30 AM.
- Getting up early gives all of these people an opportunity to make the most of that extra time because there are fewer distractions and/or interruptions.
- Successful people exercise daily.
- According to research done by Bristol University, and many other research institutions, exercise and productivity go hand in hand. Exercise improves circulation, motivation and the speed to complete a project.
- According to the American Council on Exercise, daily exercise increases the levels of the BDNF protein that boosts cognitive activity and increases blood flow to the brain which sharpens awareness.
- According to Mark Hurd, CEO of Oracle, exercise teaches valuable business lessons. “Tennis is a space where you have to go out and perform, like in the business world.”
- Successful people read daily – often, a lot.
- Warren Buffet attests to reading six newspapers a day, recommends reading 500 pages daily, and spends 80% of his day reading. Buffet has said, “Reading is how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest.”
- Reading teaches discipline, dedication and self-motivation. It also relaxes the brain and prepares you for the next day, according to Buffet.
- Successful people use evenings wisely.
- When hoping/wanting/needing to accomplish a set of tasks, it is often best to plan your day the night before.
- Just like having a morning routine, create an evening routine by tying up loose ends and unfinished tasks to give yourself a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
- By planning/setting a few goals for tomorrow the night before, you will be prepared for tomorrow and better able to hit the ground running.
