In her latest book, Seeking Wisdom: a spiritual path to creative connection, Cameron offers tips on combining her creative practices in The Artist’s Way with what she calls intentional practice or prayer.

Cameron defines the word prayer l-o-o-s-e-l-y.  Rather than mandating  to whom you pray or trying to define a god for you, Cameron encourages her readers to connect with a creative energy both inside of and outside themselves.  Basically, prayer will look, sound and feel different for all of us and there is no end result.  Essentially, for Cameron, praying brings a kind of freedom that helps all of us seek wisdom.

Creative Practice #1: “Morning Pages”

This is Cameron’s fundamental tool to help people “unblock their creativity.”  She believes morning pages bring “clarity, direction and productivity” to all aspects of our lives.

First thing in the morning (no longer than 45 minutes after waking) write 3 pages about anything in your own handwriting.  It doesn’t matter what you write about, just write for three pages.  Even if you can’t think of anything to write about, write about that for three pages without stopping.

Cameron believes that Morning Pages serve as a kind of “brain drain” that helps/enables/allows people to release the worries, fears and/or distractions that stand between themselves and their day.  Cameron says, “There’s no wrong way to do Morning Pages.”

Do NOT share your Morning Pages with anyone.  These pages are for you, and you alone, so don’t censor yourself before, during or after you’re writing.  It does NOT matter if your Moring Pages turns into a grocery list.  Just write for three pages.

Creative Practice #2: Make an Artist Date with Yourself

You do NOT have to be an artist to make an Artist Date.  This is your once-a-week opportunity to make a solo date with yourself just for fun.

Do something that delights and/or surprises you.  Eat at a new restaurant or go to the beach or go to a bookstore or go on a new hike.  The point of making an Artist Date with yourself is to do something fun.

Creative Practice #3: Walks

Two-times-a-week, take a solo 20-minute walk.  No friend, no dog, no phone, no child, no errand.

Cameron reminds us that “…for centuries, spiritual seekers have walked – on quests, on pilgrimages…” to connect with themselves, the world around them and their higher power, however that person defines a higher power.

Creative Practice #4: Prayer

Again…Cameron defines prayer l-o-o-s-e-l-y.  To Cameron, prayer is a way to connect with a creative energy inside and outside of yourself.

Cameron’s prayer practices for seeking wisdom include:

  • Petition or what Cameron calls a “Santa Claus” prayer in which you’re asking for something and hoping “…a higher power will deliver it.” And guess what?  Your higher power may “deliver” something even better than you’d ever imagined.
  • Guidance – once a day, write down a question you have about your life and/or your busines and then “listen and write out what comes back.” The point here is to be willing to ask and then be willing to receive.  For example, you may not know how you can make a specific marketing effort more engaging and/or more informative.  You could ask what you could do to make your marketing more creative and/or unique.  Then listen to what comes back to you.   Cameron said that “…the answers that you hear may surprise you.”
  • Gratitude – once a day, write down one thing for which you are grateful. It doesn’t matter what you’re grateful for…it could be your dog.  Expressing gratitude is a form of expressing happiness and. according to Cameron, creativity is “born out of happiness, which is a radical step to take.”
