5 things we learned living through…

1.     Earthquakes are assholes, especially at 4:30am.

2.     People have differing degrees of tolerance to both perceived and real risk.  During times of crisis be the leader; be more than just their agent.  Shore up your own needs and then help your community.  Not everyone is as flexible as you.

3.     Have your plan in place for being off the grid.  Don’t count on the authorities to take care of you. They’ll be minding their affairs, not yours.  Have your own energy source, water, food, medicine, gas in your car, charge on your phone, battery backups,. cash on hand.  Plan for the worst; hope for the best.

4.     The news lies, then reports on more lies, and the lies about lies.  Have your own trusted resources.  Ronald Reagan: ‘the scariest words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help!’

5.     People are kind, generous and helpful during crises. Our generator was installed at midnight during a rainstorm and they all had ‘it’s my pleasure’ attitudes!

Your routine is your stabilizer.  Get back to some level of normalcy even if it’s for a few hours a day.  Work out, do your follow up calls, eat your normal diet and stay connected.
