Adaptability, flexibility and multifunctionality are becoming the keystones of rooms and furniture. Robots are improving as are their costs. Televisions and other essential furniture are moving towards foldability, rollability and even towards recognizing our gestures.
Here are some things to look for in 2022 homes.
Multipurpose Rooms
After working and learning from home these past two years, more and more of us have learned it’s not so easy to convert a bedroom or basement space into an office.
In 2022, look for multipurpose rooms that can become a den, a gym, a playroom and/or a conference space. Look for room dividers, smart storage space inside furniture pieces, and modular furniture on wheels that make things easy to rearrange or reconvert.
Think of a room the way we think of a Swiss Army knife…an all-in-one knife/room with multiple functions.
Energy Efficiency
Look for smart-home systems that can train themselves based on how people inside the house move. For example, think of lighting systems that can dim or brighten whether or not a person is in the room or the television is on. Think of heating/cooling systems that can “relax” whether or not a person is in the room just as many hotels have already installed.
We’ve already written about thermostats and security systems such as Nest’s Learning Thermostat, ecobbe’s Alexa-enabled ecobee4 and Zen Within’s Zen that learn both familiar movement patterns and unfamiliar patterns of people and/or intruders in the home. As of 2022, all of these systems are controlled on your phone. The next step will be for these home systems to run autonomously based on initial behaviors, inputs and ongoing patterns/habits.
